It has been a year since the first public release of Free Cities.
This isn't where I expected FC to be a year ago. The game has gotten a lot more attention than I expected, and working on it turned out to be more fun than I could have imagined. As for definite plans for the future of FC, I intend to keep working on FC as long as I have the time to do so, as long as it's fun to do so, and as long as I feel that the game is improving. None of that looks like it'll be changing anytime soon. Thank you all for playing.
To celebrate the anniversary of FC's first public release, this update is one of the game's biggest. It integrates the recently added neighboring arcology system, the existing lategame rivalry event chain, and new content to confront the player with a challenge. It adds a popularly requested item, modern prosthetic limbs, which can make an amputee more than she ever was when she had natural arms and legs. It allows slaves with hypermassive breasts to leave the Dairy for a life of sedentary majesty elsewhere. Finally, it also integrates major contributions from FC's growing group of active modders, including CornCobMan's spectacular overhaul of the rules system.
Like previous updates that made significant expansions to what's possible for slaves in the game world, there will inevitably be instances of slaves with hypermassive tits or prosthetic limbs doing things that don't make sense. As usual, I did my best to catch these, but I'm sure many slipped past me. If you encounter one of these, please report it.

- The game will attempt to define a leading neighbor arcology as the PC's rival, though this will not be immediately revealed.
- The Daughters of Liberty event chain now features the rival arcology owner as the antagonist if one is active.
- Rival arcologies enjoy minor bonuses to economic efficiency and FS adoption.
- Rival governments will shift to individual rule, and will not experience changes of government.
- Early FS choices will define a primary FS disagreement between the PC and the rival, with the rival always choosing the opposite FS.
- Rivals have a high chance of making further FS selections that disagree with the PC's choices.
- The prosperity of the PC's arcology now factors into victory in the inter-arcology event chain.
- If a rival arcology is active, its prosperity factors into victory in the inter-arcology event chain.

ReplyDeleteMAJOR BUG: Rather than evaluate all the RA rulesets and apply the final result, the game seems to apply each ruleset if it is valid as it is checked. This becomes an issue when dealing when ruleset items that cost money to apply.

Rule 1 (always): Minimal makeup.
Rule 2 (devotion over 10): Gorgeous makeup.
The above rule settings will cause the game to apply minimal makeup to all slaves, then apply gorgeous makeup if the slave is devoted. The next time the RA runs, which may be every time the player goes back to the main menu, devoted slaves (who are currently wearing gorgeous makeup) will be given minimal makeup (because they're a slave) and then gorgeous makeup (because they're devoted).
The result is that the player loses 100¤ for every devoted slave they have every time they visit the main menu (if auto-apply RA is turned on) since the game continuously applies the minimal makeup (which costs 50¤), then the gorgeous makeup (which costs 50¤).
Would it not be better to just apply minimal makeup to slaves with devotion 10 or less?
DeleteShort answer: No. That example was intended to provide an easy way to reproduce the bug; actual rulesets that intend to do more than just set the makeup must be constructed in a fashion that prevents this simple adjustment.
DeleteLong answer: Let's say I want a set of rules for each general devotion level: Hateful+, Hateful, Resistant, Ambivalent, Accepting, Devoted, and Worshipful. Since I can't define a range but am forced to use <= or >=, one of the two extremes is guaranteed to end up with all of the rulesets applied to them (every devotion level is >= -20 and every devotion level is <= 20), and since devotion levels start on whole numbers, using <= means newly devoted slaves (at devotion 10) would still be under the Accepting rules.
This means I must use >= devotion checks. Since I'm using >=, I have to define Hateful+ first and Worshipful last (otherwise the Hateful+ rules will win out over the Worshipful rules), though I don't actually define Hateful+ and just make it my Always set to save space. So if I want everyone to have minimal makeup except Worshipful slaves, the bug will occur, since the Always set will apply minimal and the Worshipful set will apply gorgeous.
Alright, I will work on making it possible to set ranges for rules.

It really does open up some good possibilities for some real flexibility later on but right now i find it impossible to do the normal settings of accepting or lower gets punished and devoted or higher get perks. Using the random number assigned in the background for those settings is just terrible. Is 4 accepting? Is it devoted? Why does it ALWAYS seem to just apply both rules when i only have two rules and one is for 4 and less and the other is 6 or more? Really just needs a button that says DEVOTED OR HIGHER or ACCEPTING OR LOWER instead of the numerical values that literally mean nothing to someone that isnt code diving. In all honesty the system needs a real layer of polish before it should be included.

DeleteIt seems like if you have this bug the slave has allready given a proper birth but is still pregnant, you can fix this by loading week start save and give the slave an abortion. You will still get the proper amount of births counted but ofc this is an extreme fix to a simple bug.
DeleteI do not know if this development is better or worse considering we have had bugged pregnant slaves since 0.6.x. It looks like the insemination regime works as intended finally.
The slave I had with this bug also had persistent errors on end week where oral count and vaginal accessory could not be properly read. I am not sure if it is related.
That fix does work, however if the slave has a pregnancy fetish that will mindbreak them. So yeah... Fix makes me sad.

Hmm I can't duplicate the error here. Did you start a new game or using an old version save. I'll try starting a new game to see if I can get the same to happen. Been though the code for this and and nothing is out of ordinary that I can see at the moment.

Did you start a new game, or is it an old save? Though being completely save compatible, it shouldn't matter, but you never know.
DeleteIt's an old save on NGP. I thought it was an issue on the save file being incompatible with the latest version so I started a new game, unfortunately, the error still appears.
DeleteRan both NGP and the new game file simultaneously and after a while, I got into a weird birthing loop with my Headgirl's personal toy on the NGP.
The screen shows the 'birthing' message and after I hit continue it just flashes and the message appears again.

That way, people who are fine with the altered (and confusing and rather un-user-friendly) RA can continue using it, and those who prefer the original model can use it. Because playing entirely without the Rules Assistant rapidly sucks the entertainment value out of the game as you drown in minutiae, but playing with this new Rules Assistant is a combination of "Sort The If-Then Statement" and "Spreadsheet Simulator 2016". And right now those are my only choices.

Clicking the continue / end hyperlink just ends up repeating the same birthing screen again.
Both games it was around week 85 - 90 after the attack failed. Again, not sure if that makes any difference but up until then no issues on both games.
Same loop with the "giving birth" event: "With childbirth approaching, Laura is carried to her prepared birthing area. She is stripped and placed into your waiting arms upon your couch. begins to panic as she begins to push out her baby as you tease her beasts and belly. Her child is promptly taken and, following a cleaning and a fresh change of clothes, she is returned to your office."".

Earning from club - the DJ seems to earn a good amount compared with say a good brothel slave but assigning more slaves to working in the club doesn't seem to make much difference for potential earnings.
Also surely the club sales drinks another means to earn some profit?
Would it also be possible to sell drugs and hormones shots which the PC seems to have an unlimited access to for a small profit to private slave owners.
Perhaps even throw in an event where a patron buys some aphrodisiacs and gives them to one of the working girls which greatly increases her earning that night but at the cost of her losing health forcing her to have to take a 2-3 days off work or optionally visit the clinic for treatment for 24 hours for some much needed R&R either option increases her labido / increases chance of becoming nympho for X number of weeks if her current labido is high enough and/or a small chance of her becoming addicted.
more possible events:
1. a slave gains access to the drugs and decides to steal some, various options:
a. she takes the drugs herself
b. injects or forces another slave (rival or FWB) to take some
c. very slim chance manages to slip them into the players food/drink - either out of revenge or in the hope she will get more attention (if aphrodisiacs)
If added to the game other possible options could be added such as the player suffers the effects of some of the other drugs for a short period.
2. milk / semen sales from a highly prestigious slave
3. PC being asked to be a stud for a private slave owner. Slave loaned to player for a few days to ensure she becomes pregnant.
4. More options to open up in the arcade.
a. a private citizen requests a particular (random) slave who doesn't normally work in the brothel or arcade.
b. a private citizen requests the services of the player - citizen could be either male or female for a night
c. player spots a private citizen who he/she would like to add to his/her harem (less options to change the person than if they were an indentured slave - ie not drugs, not bad treatment, not get them pregnant etc)

Though the fight was short, the audience is very impressed by the display. Sophie wants to win badly enough that she takes an extremely unpleasant shortcut to victory. The instant the fight starts, she furiously goes for Junko's eyes, hands forming claws. Junko defends herself with her arms, at which point Sophie delivers a mighty cunt punt. Junko goes straight down, her mouth soundlessly opening and closing and tears leaking from her closed eyes while her hands desperately shield her outraged pussy. Sophie follows her down and puts the unresisting girl's head in a simple lock. The audience is not very impressed by this easy win.
Possible bug: Girls immobilized by overly large breast regularly don't qualify for any events and get the placeholder. I've gotten the placeholder event for various pieces of furniture for 20 turns running.

Gating the better growth hormones behind high rep levels really sucks by the way. if you are going to give us growth+ why not just charge more like the aphrodisiacs and the male/female hormones? just leave the final level dependent on the upgrade like it was before please. Also letting up on the dairy nerf would be nice cause it is crippled as is.
ReplyDeleteI created an "always" rule for cosmetic and body mods and it appears that "always" means that the game will apply those rules every time you go to the main screen, even if the mod has already been completed on that slave and charge you the appropriate fee.

Is there anyway to revert to the old rules assistant? I admire the precision of the new one, but it is far too fiddly/complex and time consuming to set up for me. I prefer the ease of use of the old one much more.

Another error was when I sent a massive breasted woman to my master suite. I could not assign her to Concubine but I could assign her as a normal attendant. She was the headgirl before but her breasts got to big to continue. She kept the head girl work tag.

ReplyDeleteThere is a huge issue with the birthing scene, it keeps repeating, locking off game progression completely. the only way to stop it is to revert the save and abort the baby, which can break the slave, or sell the slave, but they may be one of your favorites.

Seem to be getting far too many repeat events for slaves who aren't well trained (poor devotion and poor loyalty) in the diary. The event is the option of choosing a fetish or to steer them away. Over a ten week period the same event repeated 5-6 times for the same slave and for the same fetish no matter what answer was selected. This became noticeable after what was probably week 95-100.
After selling the slave the event selected the next worst slave with (poor devotion and poor loyalty) from the slaves in the diary and continued to be showed more frequently then probably intended.
Secondly I've noticed my city value suddenly drop by 30+ million suddenly over one week. No dramatic event has occurred, I've not sold anything of worth or seemingly done anything as far as I know to cause it. The city value then increases again at a slightly higher rate for a few weeks until it returns to what it was before then continues to rise as much slower as expected.
BUG: Whenever I import slaves through New Game+ they always become very tall.

ReplyDeleteThe only things stopping a slave from being a Madam etc. are not already being assigned to another job (facility) excluding Head girl, Bodyguard, Recruiter. Must have a devotion higher than 10(Devoted) Must be able to walk. and for some an intelligence greater than -2(Very slow)

DeleteIt looks like only difference is the patch number. According to what is on the main segment, it says that "Latest hotfix is 0.8.6.2 (1645 PST September 21), completely save compatible." If that's not acurate then that should be updated.

I then closed the FC tab, reloaded the .html file and loaded the same old save and It's not giving me the error now. Maybe the browser has to update it's offline files?

The new Rules Assistant seems to be needlessly complicated. It shouldn't be necessary to create multiple rule sets just emulate the old RA. In the previous RA, if I wanted curatives applied to unhealthy slaves I just set to do so. Now, I have to create a rule set that's keyed into health because the default is keyed to devotion and will only give curatives to slaves over a certain threshold. Either bring back the old RA completely or let us choose which one we want.

Somewhere there seems to be a number variable being added to a string! It will go from being 'Rule 1' to 'Rule 11' not 'Rule 2'. Perhaps the above $r+1 needs to be ($r+1), and maybe other places also.
Seems to work now (have rule 2 not 11)till I save and apply the rule then the other errors appear. but if I don't apply the rule all is fine. Well enough from me for the night.

I know the general idea was to make it more flexible and add the ability to let it respond to more situations, but instead it's just making things mind-bendingly complex. And the new version isn't helping. Besides the glitches when adding new rules, I had to stare at the more than/less than statements for about five minutes to wrap my head around the way it was being presented. Was it really so hard to present it as a changeable "If [dev/health/trust] is [less/more/equal] than/to [X], then:"? There was no reason to set it up as two changeable variables and make people define a range with badly worded statements. And even if you're going to allow two options, then put in an optional [and] statement that people can add in order to make the range themselves, don't force the range upon them.

DeleteYes. You have no idea how much trouble I had. I originally had it so that it would hide the boxes and if there was not limit but then the values were reset to undefined when the rule was being saved. I then also had errors when trying apply the values to the rule.
Around week 75 money and rep starts showing nothing. When I reload, they're both reset to zero, and it tells me my main, established FS's have failed.

ReplyDeleteWondering if there is some kind of coding reason why almost no former male slaves is the lowest setting cause it would be super awesome to be able to toggle this to none. Also is the strangely high rate of women with shoulders wider than hips (seriously this is very rare in the real world but super common in game) tied to this cause it feels like these were supposed to be men and the game just slapped some female parts on the masculine pre-generated body shape. If it is a coding issue and nothing can be done about it ah well still great game but if a zero toggle can be worked out that would be even better.

The team is aware of the problems and is working on improvements for version 8.6.
Although currently, we haven't heard a word from them in regards to the third hotfix, we can expect to hear from them soon.

Old tattoos seem to bug with amputated slaves with p-limbs, still says "Tattoos run down the legs" in the description but you can't remove them anymore at this point since the entries are gone in the shop.

Paz collates several options for directly attacking your rival. This is a corporate war, not a military one; your peers would not tolerate a direct attack on her. You must bankrupt your opponent so they are no longer able to hide within the physical and intangible fortress that is their arcology. I got the 'eternal give birth' bug for a cow in my Industrial Dairy. Pretty much a game breaker, so probably a priority choice. With that said, even when buggy, I enjoy the progress.

ReplyDeleteNew game+ carries old rules even if those rules are specific to a certain facility a new game would not have and you can't unautoassign people to a place.
IE
anyone under 5 devotion goes to the cellblock despite not owning one and you can't stop it until you get a new cell block.

This new rules assistant is significantly less intuitive than the old one and seems to be causing nothing but problems including completely borking the birth sequences.

Having issues with the pregnancies in the dairy. It DOES get fixed with pulling them out for the week, but it's rather annoying to have to.
ReplyDeleteI experienced an error when my slaves gave birth, it would give the description, I'd hit continue and it would give the description again. Couldn't get it to advance even after hitting continue continuously/
ReplyDeleteA couple issues: First, ending the Arcology war quickly via the Merc background currently results in the game attempting to still import your rival's assistant, but it doesn't create a name for her and the description is riddled with errors. Second, the pregnancy issue in the dairy is quite frustrating (the endless births). Last, I'm still having $profit errors as of the new hotfix: " Since she doesn't have enough whores to manage to keep her busy, she sees 11 customers herself, earning you ¤415. She can charge more for her time, since many citizens find it erotic to fuck the Madam. There are 4 slave whores working out of the Brothel. An ad campaign is supporting business there, and whores that match it make more ¤. The Brothel makes you ¤$profits this week. The Brothel's customers enjoy fucking whores in Body Purist surroundings."
ReplyDeleteThere is a bug that if any slave in a facility ( diary, master suite , other ) gives birth. A endless loop will occur . However many times the error ( and the loop ) can be avoided if the slave is removed from the facility just prior to birth.

ReplyDeleteMarried a slave, and assigned her to the clinic. Some time later a penis was grown for her and I implanted it and also did an age-lift and corrected her vision.
Next check and she was no longer my wife
