ALPHA 0.7.11: Nominal Consideration


This is a mechanical update that adds some functionality to the retirement system and extends it to allow indentured servitude as well. Indentured servitude is a rich basis for events and other new content, but the mechanic is limited to an indenture market for now. Once it's playtested and working properly, it'll be fleshed out. (For those who haven't been following this project, that's my standard approach: add a mechanic in one update, fill it out over succeeding updates.) Indentured servants are called slaves in most scenes, and I'm writing them into FC as a subset of slaves, simply because "slave" appears in the HTML more than 53,000 times. Real world debates about the nature of indentured servitude are going to have to defer to practicality, here.

This update also adds an automated alternative to rules assistant applied curatives for players who prefer to keep their girls drug free but don't want to micromanage slaves' health, either. The universal rules menu now has an option that directs the personal assistant to automatically reassign unhealthy slaves to spend the week resting, and then return them to their original assignment once they are healthy. This is not a change to the effects of curatives or rest; its impact is exactly the same as if the player manually directed rest for anyone with a negative health value before ending the week.

0.7.11.1 fixes:
  • Starting a game normally will no longer produce an errored event and then retire a random slave
  • Slaves who decide to get treatment in the Clinic will no longer be condemned to a quasi-existence from which there is no escape

0.7.11 Changelog

Indentured servitude
  • Added indentured servitude to the game; in most situations, indentured servants will continue to be referred to as slaves.
  • Indentured servitude works as an alternative to the retirement system, so indentured servants cannot retire.
  • Being an indentured servant has several long term mental effects, most of which will tend to make unhappy indentured servants disobedient.
  • Added a straightforward expiration event similar to the retirement event with differing outcomes based on a slave's feelings about the PC.
  • Indentures are either Protective, Restricted, or Unrestricted, with the first two placing some restraint on what the PC can do.
  • Restrictive indentures forbid invasive surgeries, service in an industrial Dairy, confinement in a glory hole or service in an Arcade, and subordination to the Head Girl.
  • Protective indentures additionally forbid most elective surgeries, any Dairy duty other than free range service, most drugs, and intensive hormonal regimes.
  • Higher indenture restrictions and lower indenture time remaining will both depress indentured servant prices.
  • Added a source of indentured servants to the slave markets.
  • Updated the Rules Assistant and other automation features to respect restrictive and protective indentures.
  • Added a miniscene for Dairy restraint setting changes, which will eject indentured servants protected against the new settings.
Retirement updates
  • Slaves can now be manually slated for retirement from their individual menus.
  • Added several milestone retirement policies with customizable goals, available if citizen retirement is active.
  • Slaves in committed relationships can have their partners retired with them if citizen retirement is active.
  • Added alternative versions of the jewelry and steel collars with counters that display a slave's retirement status, if any.
Other updates
  • Added an automatic rest universal rule, which will allow the personal assistant to temporarily rest slaves who need it.
  • Devoted and intelligent Bodyguards will now pass combat training on to responsible slaves if they feel there are not enough replacement bodyguard prospects available.
  • Added a universal rule to forbid Bodyguards from training successors.
  • Reduced positive and negative effects of character customizations on reputation.
  • Restored and improved shape impacts of breast expansion lost with the transition to non-random boob growth.
  • Encyclopedia additions.
  • Minor code consolidation.

    2. Aging-related content, including retirement, can be toggled at game start, but not during a playthrough.

      Milestone retirements are limited to citizen retirement, for now, because the mental impacts of each possible retirement scheme are different. Slaves who are nearing the milestone should obviously react quite differently depending on what will happen to them after they reach it.

    3. I had this happen as well. I opened up the save looking for the conditional expression that the error message displays, but I was unable to find it with the search function. Nor was I able to find $retiree, oddly.

  5. OVERSIGHT: Slaves trained by slave orphanages can spawn with the repressed trait, which makes no sense as that trait is defined as "a fundamental distaste for sex from her upbringing".

Look forward to playing with indentures, my immediate thought before starting is that in some circumstances normally restricted surgery might be available specifically because the indentured servant wants it, (for example, there's already stuff in the game with somebody selling herself into slavery in the hopes of aid with gender transition), or relaxed in the case of worshipful indentures. Probably these are most relevant to advanced surgery options (since presumably if the indenture is after something that would increase value that's already been done and built into the cost), and the easiest way to do the first is to create more contract categories (I think it'll be easy to code this way by assigning whitelists to a contract type, EG 'wantstobefuta' and a code call that says 'isallowed(restrictive) or isallowed(wantstobefuta) which would get a wantstobefuta slave to accept or herm surgery, ovaries, or breast implants/hormones up to size X.

  9. Will there be an expansion of options in the Rules Assistant, specifically the Smart Piercing default settings? For example, having each fetish available for selection from the start instead of the No Default Setting, All Sex and No Sex options.

    It could be somewhat interesting to get all the player-owned slaves be under one type of fetish. Having every slave be under a specific type of fetish then selecting the appropriate policies could make for an interesting gameplay element. Probably.

  11. Eventually implementing a system involving slaves being able to possess multiple fetishes I think is inevitable, so here is my idea:

    There are three types: High, Medium, and Low. Humiliation would have to be split into two, being something like Showmanship and then also Humiliation. Slaves can't have both fetishes related to each other from opposite ends of the spectrum, such as being simultaneously dominant and submissive. Medium type fetishes would include anal and pregnancy and stuff.

    This way, you could have a slave that is submissive, into humiliation, and a masochist, and also into anal. But you could also have a slave that is submissive but also a showman (or show-woman), and maybe even sadistic as well, so they have a variety of high and low level fetishes.

    Another thought: Maybe whether a slave was into humiliation or showmanship could affect the way they experience events while performing public service, and maybe this could be an element in other events too.

  13. I would like to toss an idea out into the void. I quite most aspects of the bimbofication fetish, the nymphomania, the general style of appearance and the personality, but absolutely hate IQ loss (I'm the type of person who plays this in a very Paternalistic and semi consensual manner).

    I think mayhaps some form of bimbofication via hypnosis or some other effect would be quite nice, having the effect of altering the girls speech (similar to how heavy piercings do). There could be an initial easier to access form of this that provides some benefits (more skills, more attractiveness, something along those lines), but has a heavy intelligence drop. But for kinder players, a harder more expensive option that provides the altered speech but no intelligence drop.

    I appreciate the option to disable aging, since the idea of the girls or PC growing old and dying is extremely uncomfortable for me. With the restriction described of "medically possible in the next ten years", I am wondering if some form of Anti-agathic treatment would be plausible as an end game option.

    There is 1 cow in the the Dairy. Fertile cows make you a small profit through contract pregnancies. The Dairy produced $milkWeek liters of milk this week. The machines also managed to reclaim 2 liters of saleable vaginal secretions. These products sell for ¤25.

  18. It appears that the two policies to turn a blind eye to citizen enslavement for cash or reputation have bugged effects on the transfer of citizens to slaves. Both have the sign on the change of the seed value for how many citizens get enslaved set to negative, like the policies that should protect against enslavement, and unlike Degradationism, Pastoralism, and Chattel Religionism.

  22. I think the resting unhealthy slaves thing should be a rules assistant option like the automatic curatives one. It's confusing to have them in different places. Plus it should be possible to choose rest unhealthy slaves and rest imperfectly healthy slaves like you can with curatives.

  23. The morning event where two slaves have breakfast is currently bugged. It fires with only one eligible slave present, and either returns a mess of errors, or results in a slave having a schizophrenic episode where she talks to herself.

    "You look into the part of the kitchens used for slave feeding one morning during a quiet time, finding the area deserted except for Rebeca . She sees you enter and puts her cup of liquid slave food down, but you make a dismissive, go back to what you were doing gesture, and she obediently goes back to drinking her breakfast. You pull out a tablet and start getting some work done, enjoying the low, human sounds of your chattel going about their business in the rooms all around you. Rebeca pads in, looking not quite awake yet. Not noticing you in her stupor, she draws her ration and heads over towards Rebeca to drink it next to her. She's clearly looking for some companionship this morning, but her gears visibly turn for a while before her sleepy head can come up with something to say. Both the slaves are allowed some variety of flavor in their liquid slave food, so she finally settles on that. "What flavor did you choose?" she asks Rebeca."

  25. In the name of 8/hgg/ I would like to humbly request that you stop using your time on further developing slave aging and retirement. We do not like the feature, we want our young slaves to remain young and milfs to remain milfs, we do not want to lose our slaves after an arbitrary time period, and replacing them is just busy work. I suggest putting up a poll on this subject, I'm sure the majority of people feel the same, unless you personally like the feature and want to keep developing it, then it's fine, it's your game after all.
    And yes I know aging can be turned off, but I just think your time would be better spent on developing other features

Her muscles help her handle the fattest or most reluctant cow. Her talented tongue helps her keep her girls happy. Fertile cows make you a small profit through contract pregnancies. The Dairy produced $milkWeek liters of milk this week. The machines also managed to reclaim 125 liters of saleable vaginal secretions. These products sell for ¤625.

    Pretty sure I'm not making any money off of milk. This happens every week.

    In cheatmode I can choose any clothes for my slaves, besides certain Future Society ones...for example the Qipao. But if I choose the chinese society I can choose it via the rules assistant, but not via the slave menu. If I disable cheat mode, I can choose the qipao in the slave menu.

  37. Hi, i'm getting a bug where slaves emotionally bound to me end up marrying me without any event or anything like that, this is very weird.
    Also if you're taking suggestion it would be cool if on the end of the week report you could click on your brothel/club and see the slaves log as if they were whoring normally, i don't like how they all the slaves in the facility get packed up on two lines of text and you can't see how their sexual skills improved, what happened and etc.

  39. Hi, I'd like to request a change in the "Daughter of liberty" chain of event.

    When they demand you to release a slave, you should be given the choice to realease that slave to infiltrate their organisation. That would be an intersting choice with multiple outcomes and a risk value.

    There would be different outcome possible :
    - If she isn't at least devoted and trusting it could lead to a betrayal (like the actual ending when released) that would only be revealed afterwise
    - If she isn't intelligent enough : chance of being discovered risking the life/well-being of the spy and making the attack against the acrology stronger.

    If she is fine then the mission can succeed : the attack is forsaw and therefore the damages against the acrology are minor, the Daughter of liberty are captured and the the player is acclamed (like in the actual event). The slave becomes a celebrity (a nice line in her description would also be welcome). The "acrology war" chain of event that follows would available without paying money (because the slave discovered the plot from inside).

    Just requesting this event because seeing a worshiping, profoundly trusting, personnaly impregnated, married to player and in love slave betraying the most slave friendly acrology (and even personnaly shooting the player in the game over senario) seem wrong to me.

      It seems that the peaceful option lead to nowhere and stops the imediate events that follow otherwise. Should it really mandatory to act as an imperialist old world state in order to become a powerful acrology ? I think it against the lore you created.

      So it would be nice to have an non-imperialist alternative in the story : not destroying the other acrology but force it to oppen to your poeple and slowly absorb it.

    2. I think read about it somewhere in the comments that the FCDev likes the idea that the devotion and trust stats to be more abstract than concrete. Somewhat like that a slave that trust you completely may truly trust you, or simply acts that way (either way it doesn't matter in most cases, because sincere or not gets the same end result). That way every slave gets an air of "may be or may be not?".

      In this case though maybe he'll add it, or not. It could still fit, under the idea that insincere just believe you'll win in the end, or he could simply just break away from the idea.

    I am puzzled about the indentured servitude and its potential. All upgrades so far have been great in building an atmosphere, the future societies being a prime example.

    1. Indentured servitude seems like it would mesh well with a paternalist arcology. You sell yourself into temporary slavery, while the oligarch can use you to further/fund the arcology, then you're freed at the end of your term. You get room, board, and protection while indentured, then become a citizen after. The oligarch makes money off you while indentured (which is presumably put back into improving/defending the arcology) and then gains a productive citizen afterwards.

  47. I've come across an issue with the slave markets that I think involves lowering the retirement age.

    If you enact policy to lower the retirement age from 45, the slave markets will periodically get 'stuck' on a blank screen instead of displaying a slave. You have to back out to the main screen to get around it, you can't refresh or F5 the screen.

    I think what is happening is that the game generates a slave who is already past the retirement age, and this is somehow throwing a wrench into things. If I am right (and I may not be, I haven't been able to track down exactly what bits of code are the problem) the solution may be as simple as adding a block of code to 'Generate XX Slave' and 'Generate XY Slave' similar to the Supremacist one (ie, if SlaveAge>RetirementAge, then re-roll the entire slave).

    I think that the way subordinate slavery works should be revisited. With the introduction of menial slaves, who are implied to be doing menial work such as cleaning and maintenance, it doesn't make a whole lot of sense for the PC to devote perfectly good sex slaves to menial work. Additionally, in the near-future age of ubiquitous drones and automation, it doesn't factor how a cleaning girl could save the PC money.

    1. To arrest decline in citizen population and eventually reverse the trend is possible, it just requires multiple layers of policy and future society. Ideally for these purposes you want both policies to reduce loss of citizens and both policies to increase growth of the citizen population, backed up with one or two of the following Future Societies: Paternalism, Egyptian Revivalism, and Roman Revivalism.

      On an unrelated note: FSDev, would it be possible to save the automatic renaming of slaves under a Revivalism for arcologies that also implement the appropriate language as their lingua franca? When I grab Roman Revivalism as my last Future Society choice in an already-Paternalist arcology named Independence City keeping to English as its language, I'm trying to represent something closer to early American Roman inspirations than 'we are LITERALLY the new Rome'. That said, perfectly understandable if you view this request as inappropriate to setting.

    2. I undersoond Roman Revivalism similarly. Not as Rome 2.0, but as a new society based on Roman dogmas (laws, social structure, politics, etc.) - an influence of early European civilization instead of its resurrection. I was kind of displeased to see that people are dissatisfied that they don't need to learn and switch to speaking latin, one of the least practical languages possible, especially in a futuristic setting (how do you say "computer" in latin??). I was also displeased when I had no option to turn off gladiatorial fights - I mean, is that really necessary in the 21st century? It was a means to placate the masses by providing them with cheap and visceral entertainment in ancient times... maybe make it a policy?

So I have a lurcher that is 19, possesses a sizeable, working dick, is aroused by women, is not on hormones, has maxed out devotion and trust, and is a sadist, and yet she can never seem to get it up when she goes coursing. Earlier I had a hermaphrodite lurcher that was devoted, had a functioning dick, etc., and she had the same issue. Am I missing some detail?

    I was curious to see the logic the code uses, so I unpacked the game in Twine, and was unable to find the relevant passage. I was able to find the portion of the scheduled event selector that passes control to the event, but I was not able to find the event itself. Am I doing something wrong here as well?

    1. another noteable bug is that, when creating new slaves at the beginning, if you start over with a new slave, if it just so happens to start out with desireable traits, like double virgin while also being a sex expert and very attractive etc. etc., if you change other things around, it won't change the price, unless you change those specific traits. Example being that, if your slave starts out as a virgin, but you change it to gaping and then change it back, the price goes from the 3000 to 11350 because it's properly registering that the traits are there. I admittedly abused this to get 12 slaves at the very beginning that were all double virgins with mastery in all skills and were accepting of their positions in life because going from ambivalent to accepting doesn't change it either. All I did was click start over with new slave and then added her in and added 11 others based off of her for the exact same price of 3000, having 30000 as starting money. Now, in my game, for the first time, I became worshiped at the 30 week mark because I had half of them whoring and the other half working as public servants. The price was only so low because of their flaws in addition to the bug though, but I probably could have gotten it lower by making them all advanced pregnant.

So, I recently got the inspiration to make a bunch of slaves that were from anime, like the naruto shippuden girls, but came upon a small problem that could be a pretty nice addition to the game, and it's basically that you can't add multiple attitude/sexual flaws with the new slaves at the beginning of the game. For example, Ino would need Bitchy and Arrogant right off the bat. As well, I feel that a few new flaws would be good additions, such as Shy and Crazy and Aggressive. Shy being that they are too introverted to properly sell their services, even if they really want to, and it can get reformed into something like the shamefast/teasing. Crazy would be similar to odd, only more of a middle ground flaw that some customers actually really like, while others don't like it. You know, like they're unpredictable, but it can lead to good things, but usually only with special customers who become return clients. Might be too similar to Odd, but whatever. Then for aggressive, it would be similar to how the high Dom trait has them being aggressive lovers, only they apply more rough sex to everyone, make for better pit fighters and lurchers, and can turn other slaves into masochists. Also, in regards to pit fights and Lurchers, will there ever be an option to host fights without participating so you can make small amounts of betting money/reputation for letting other slave owners fight their slaves in your pit? As well, would you be able to set up some hares to run away from lurchers for money/rep if they win, but risk losing a slave if they are caught as well as being able to host without participating like previously suggested?

After thinking about it for a few minutes, I think Crazy would actually be even better if it was a trait that led to the slave switching up tastes, skills, and other flaws/perks randomly every week and could be reformed into something like Adventurous, where she appeals to people wanting an energetic and outgoing girl who says yes to trying out anything. While the Shy trait could even just be reformed into cute bluntness where she quietly/nervously admits to wanting to have sex with as many people as she can, and then yelling it loudly when she gets asked to speak up or to repeat herself, leading to increased reputation and more traffic her way.

  57. So I've mentioned this before, but I was told that I was wrong and that it wasn't a bug, but it really seems like a bug. In the intervening 3-6 months since I last reported this, I have never seen hormones successfully improve facial beauty beyond pretty (the completely average option) despite using heavy hormones, hormone enhancers and the slave having working ovaries. Hip and shoulder changes, breast changes, and butt changes all seem to be happening normally, but face changes seem to stop short of ever reaching very pretty or gorgeous, which I was told should be possible. So if that's working as intended, sorry to bother you, but I got the impression that it was supposed to be possible but highly unlikely to improve face beyond pretty.

    2. As per 0.7.10 the code for hormone effects only increase facial beauty to 1. To go to 2 (gorgeous) one needs to use surgery. I haven't looked at 0.7.11. I don't know if this is an oversight or intentional. Could be argued either way. FCDev?

    3. I think I remember FCDev saying that it is INTENTIONAL that hormones don't get faces to gorgeous. Before you simply could set female hormones and get a gorgeous slave after some time and FCDev thought it was "to easy" so he changed it.
      Tbh it makes (kinda) sense: no amount of hormones will change it if the overall skull structure doesn't support a gorgeous face in the first place, sure a person will look more feminine but hormones can only do so much.

    4. Well, right now it is possible for a slave with gorgeous face to become unattractive due to hormone treatments or even just working out too much. Once that slave's facial beauty score drops down from 2, she can never get it back to 2. Despite having the same overall skull structure. Despite having the same DNA. Which is kinda weird.

      Dear FC Dev, if you reason that it's too easy, then just make the chance really low. Right now to get from 0 to 1 one needs to deliberately use aphrodisiacs, which is expensive, and yet the chance/week of getting an increase is low. Allowing hormone treatments to do the same, but with only of a small chance of increase per week might do it. A 5% chance means that on average you get 1 step increase in 20 weeks. If this is insufficiently long, perhaps a 3% chance, or 2%. Alternatively, rather than a small chance you could implement a diminishing increase, where if facial beauty is less than 1 then every week hormone level 2 will increase it by 0.05 but if it's greater than 1 then the increase is only 0.02.

      I think this is a more elegant approach rather than the current ones, because right now any backslide from facial beauty score of 2 is impossible to recover.

    1. After you've bought the fabricator, go back down the manage arcology menu to the spot where the fabricator was and there should be highlighted blue text that you can click on and it will take you to a new menu to fabricate new stuff.

    1. yeah, but while prosthetic limbs do make sense, especially since it's in the future, it kind of begs the question as to why you even amputated in the first place. The only way that I could see it making its way into the game is if you could turn them into cyborgs to add security to your arcology and to add a new form of pit fights. But that might be going too far for the creator to be happy with. I'd personally enjoy it as a callout to the mech suits in Xcom that required the operators to be amputated and think it'd be a nice addition to the game, but it'd also require a lot of writing just for those events alone. I'd be willing to help with the writing, but I doubt he'll even read these all the way down here.

    3. There's that, and I would appreciate the option for partial (i.e. not quad) amputation. Just the legs, or arms, or just one leg or arm. Then restore it with a prosthetic following obedience. Relatively advanced prosthetic limbs exist right now, and it makes sense that they would be available to a FC in the game world, if at a significant cost.

      Would be a nice way to boost morale and reward devotion as well.

    4. Tbh in the time-frame FC is we would already have organ-printing, so also making organic-replacement-limbs shouldn't be that far off.

      The only problem would be that the limbs wouldn't be "trained"/only hvae minimal musculature and would require MULTIPLE weeks until the person coulduse them like normal. SO that means it would take a TON of time till the limbs would be finished.
      You even could pre-"train" the limbs with e-stims to build muscles, but the person would still require some training to (re-)gain control over those limbs.

  66. Is it just me, or does the spa seem to be kind of weak? I know it's supposed to be focused on boosting trust and devotion, but even with a high devotion spa intended who is attractive, submissive, highly intelligent, and over 35 and the mineral upgrade seems to be boosting devotion and trust much slower than just having the slaves out and having focus from the head girl or the player. I feel if you go through the trouble of getting a girl and facility customized to help with a specific stat, they should be a bit more powerful than just attention from the head girl or player (at least assuming the player doesn't have the slave trainer background).

    I'd also like to see the school's functionality expanded a bit. It seems kind of overkill to save you the little bit instead of the slaves just doing the take classes action. Maybe improve it so the teacher can pass on sexual skills as well?

    Anyway, great game, great update, and as always, I appreciate all the hard work!

IE something like teaching a girl until shes not just educated but rather highly educated. That would actually fit in quite well with Egyptian revivalism. Egyptian society had highly educated slaves that served as scribes and accountants.

      Being highly educated wouldn't do much for a girl that's already naturally brilliant. Sort of like how irl a talented/ ambitious enough programmer can make a living without a college degree. But for a girl who is born merely average being certified as highly educated can bring her up to the same level of value/utility of an uneducated brilliant girl.

      Perhaps girls who have less than average baseline inteligence coukd be ineligible to recieved the further training. IE they simply lack the aptitude to keep up with and comprehend the nire advanced coursework. That way you can't just completely erase every girl's idiocy.

    2 things: custom slaves: could we have an option between flat and C-cup breasts? There's currently no option to make a custom slave with less than C cup breasts without making them completely flat (and subsequently having to start over with a new slave and hope that we can achieve the breast size we want).

    amputation: could we have the option to only do two limbs, or one limb, as punishment? Say cut off a thief's legs (or arms), and then provide prosthetic limbs once obedience is achieved? It's kind of a downer to end up with an amputee (I know I can turn this off) and not be able to reward good behavior, and it's not like artificial limbs don't exist even with current technology.

  69. I think that this game should have a wiki. It would be much more interesting, and fun, in my belief of you could check out events and choices. I want a website where you could select events, read the prerequisites, and read the texts from the choices.

  70. I would also love it if you could add events based on slave's pre-slavery careers. My idea is a former cook cooking you a meal. I know this is probably hard, so I don't expect you to do it. But, it would be nice if we had those events. And, if you can, something where you could choose slave's career that has mechanical effects. I think a choose career button that takes you to a list, very similar to the nationalities.

    2. That doesn't give them the career bonus though. It just gives them a custom career name. Even if you actually type in nurse it doesn't give the nurse bonus.

I have to agree on this, an actual list would be great since most of the time that I spend making a new slave is trying to figure out which careers are actual careers, and then there's the occasions where you have to put "A" in front of the job for it to register, like, a mercenary, or a nurse, because just putting nurse or mercenary does nothing, even though both are actual career choices.

      Read the FCE.

      That's how it has to be done. Otherwise he'd have to write code to figure out whether the game should put 'a' or 'an' in front of a given job title. Much easier to just call the job 'a nurse' or 'an engineer'.

  72. This may sound dumb, but how do we manually slate slaves for retirement? What requirements need to be met? I have a pair of twins that are about to retire automatically this week, but I'm not seeing any option to retire them in their menus. Oddly, despite both having just turned 45, their collars still say they have 364 days left to serve. Is it possible that's why I can't retire them manually?

  73. Thanks for the game. It's got enough stuff to it that it's fun to play even beyond just for the porn. I wanted to let you know that while playing as a female it is possible to impregnate your slaves. I tried starting with a completely devoted and trusting virgin slave with no males around and no outside relationships allowed and she ended up pregnant after fucking her a few times.

    1. Yes, it's one of the reason I stopped playing as a female PC. I mean, it just feels jarring everytime that happens. If my slaves are gonna be impregnated no matter what gender PC is, then may as well just play male instead.

  74. I think I stumbled upon a small bug. After getting Transformation Fetishism, I was able to introduce the special Mandatory Bimbofication SMR policy, yet after abandoning Transformation Fetishism, the Bimbofication policy was still active. Is this intentional? All my other special policies vanish when I get rid of their parent customization.
