ALPHA 0.7.2: Lingua Franca


As announced in last week's post, I have not have time to playtest and support an update since 23 May. This does not mean that I haven't had time to add to FC, making this an unusual update in weight of content: it adds five events, language and accents, Paternalist marriage, several big descriptive expansions, and more. As always, my update schedule is at the mercy of my other commitments. Once I stop adding content, playtesting, debugging and finalizing an update (not to mention actually posting and supporting the wretched thing) requires an uninterrupted block of time I don't always have. Fortunately, smaller or less contiguous time can always be used to buff up descriptions or work on a new event.

Marriage between the PC and slaves is always going to be a tough thing to reconcile with the background I've built up for the FC world. I've taken a conservative approach, limiting it to committed Paternalist arcologies. Paternalism dismisses many of the more troublesome sticking points, allowing me to get a fairly straightforward marriage system out for public playtesting. Depending on feedback, I may extend its availability, but it will look very different outside Paternalism. As it stands, it serves as a reward for the virtuous oligarch, which I'm comfortable with in the short term since the industrial dairy added such a powerful incentive to be cruel.

If you can imagine a one-sentence incident in a slave's life, please submit it as a vignette. I'll be expanding the vignette system once I have a large number of vignettes to add. One of the many painful lessons this project has taught me is that it's often more efficient to make a smaller number of larger changes, where possible. So, I'm letting submissions pile up until I can add them in big waves.

  • Prevents NGP from switching Emotionally Bonded and Emotional Slut statuses.
  • Resolves a minor issue with skipping the intro.
  • Makes the end week report pruning option visible as intended.
  • Addresses Degradationist renaming issues.
  • Firing the Rules Assistant manually now respects RA exclusions.
  • Restricted slave school sales to players reputable enough to take advantage.
  • Numerous typos and descriptive bugs.
Saves from previous versions are incompatible, but 0.7+ saves are eligible for New Game Plus. Some new players have expressed confusion at the way I'm handling save compatibility, so here's a summary. FC saves are not compatible across major versions. Versions are distinguished by the third numeral in the version number, for example, 0.7.1 is one update, and 0.7.2 is another. I would love to maintain save compatiblity across updates, but it's a time-consuming task I decided to drop since it ate into time I could devote to adding content. I do my best to make the lack of save compatibility clear with every update I post, but apparently it needs to be reiterated.

To be completely clear, this means that if you start a game of FC using one version of the .html, download another version of the .html, and load your old save, it won't work. It might not be immediately apparent that it isn't working, but it won't work, and it won't work in interesting ways that will seriously annoy you. Don't do it, and if you do do it, don't report your comeuppance as though it were a bug. It's not.

When I release a new version, which has been happening roughly every week for some time now, you have three options if you're in the middle of a playthrough:
  • Start a new game in the new version, losing your progress.
  • Use the New Game Plus option to import up to five slaves into a new game in the new version by following the instructions in game.
  • Finish out the old game in the old version. Old versions remain available here.
An important caveat is that very occasionally, a new version won't break old saves. When this happens, I call it out very clearly. But in general, all versions should be assumed to be mutually save incompatible.

0.7.2 Changelog

Language and accents
  • The lingua franca of the arcology can now be defined at game start, and will default to the most common language of the selected continent.
  • Any language can be used, though English, Spanish, Chinese, and Arabic are currently better supported than others for accent generation.
  • Slaves have one of four levels of accent: no accent at all, a light accent, a heavy accent, and difficulty speaking the lingua franca.
  • Accents are generated based on the slave's intelligence, education, nationality, and in some cases, ethnicity.
  • A light accent grants a minor bonus to attractiveness.
  • Difficulty speaking the lingua franca imposes a minor penalty to attractiveness, and will prevent slave dialog in most scenes, forcing the slave to use gestures instead.
  • Having a thick accent will make Head Girls less likely to pass most training checks.
  • Being mute now imposes a significant penalty to attractiveness.
  • Slaves will naturally learn the lingua franca and moderate their accents over time, both of which will happen more rapidly if slaves are intelligent and allowed to speak.
  • Completing basic slave education will address difficulty speaking the lingua franca.
  • The lingua franca can be changed from the arcology management menu, at heavy cost in ¤ and prosperity: doing so will reroll slaves' accents.
  • Each Revivalist future society has a corresponding language, and failing to match the lingua franca to the Revivalism will retard its adoption.
  • Added an accent elimination option for speech rules, and a rules assistant setting to support it.
Marriage expansion
  • Added slave marriage to the PC. It is a Free Cities construct, and very different from traditional matrimony.
  • In order to be married, slaves must be Emotionally Bonded to the PC and the Paternalism law must be passed, but there are no other limits to the number of marriages.
  • Slaves can be married to the PC from their individual menus, or scheduled for one of several possible slave wedding events at the end of the week.
  • Being married to the PC improves several effects of being Emotionally Bonded, such as the reputational impact of fucktoy duty.
  • Assigning a slave married to the PC to public sexual duties will disappoint her and damage reputation.
  • Selling one of your slave wives will damage your reputation and disturb your other devoted slaves.
Event updates
  • Position event for Head Girls smart enough to be worried about the state of the world.
  • Generic event for devoted slaves who want to give a little gift to the PC.
  • Generic punishment event for slaves who are reluctant to accept punitive anal sex with the Head Girl.
  • Assignment event for masterful public servants, who can encounter a MILF tourist who wants to meet the notorious owner of the arcology.
  • Checkin event for slaves whose backdoors have changed a lot since they were enslaved.
  • Checkin events are no longer mutually exclusive, so individual slaves can see as many of them as they qualify for.
  • Slaves imported via New Game Plus can now requalify for checkin events during the new game.
  • Added an option to send event criminals directly to an industrial dairy, if one is operating.
Cosmetic refinements
  • Expanded anus descriptions, and added a stat that helps describe how slaves' anuses respond to vigorous use over the long term.
  • Expanded breast descriptions, and added a breast shape stat that is only significant for certain ranges of boob size: for example, over 1500CCs, naturally perky breasts will no longer be described as such, though they will return to perkiness if their size is reduced.
  • There are six possible breast shapes, of which perky and torpedo-shaped breasts add slightly to attractiveness, saggy and downward-facing breasts are slightly negative, and wide-set and normally shaped breasts have no effect.
  • Postitive and negative effects of breast shape can be lost by raising or lowering breast size until the shape is no longer described.
  • Slaves' natural breast shape may occasionally change with drug treatment, lactation, cosmetic surgery, or other radical breast changes.
  • Simply having huge breasts can cause a slave's natural breast shape to become saggy, but at unnaturally massive sizes this effect may reverse itself with further growth.
  • Alternatively, disabling description of implant effects will also disable most mentions of breast shape.
  • These new descriptive stats can be checked and altered from the description customization submenu during starting slave customization.
Other changes
  • The most routine and predictable parts of the end week report can be suppressed from the options menu.
  • Rather than disapproving of all intelligent slaves, Degradationist societies now only disapprove if an intelligent slave is not Worshipful of the PC.
  • Degradationist societies now approve of keeping slaves in an industrialized Dairy.
  • Spare living conditions will now gradually suppress high trust even with high devotion, making universal Spare rules a way to keep the player's slaves from getting too comfortable.
  • Added more detailed descriptions of slaves' relationships for certain interesting combinations of partner stats.
  • Restored anal fetish acquisition and advancement from being cockmilked.
  • Added surgical vagina removal, which is limited to hermaphrodites since the game cannot handle slaves without sex organs.
  • Rebalanced the impact of height on beauty so that Tall rather than Very Tall is now the optimum.
  • Rebalanced the impact of T&A on beauty to offer diminishing returns at very large sizes.
  • Racial Supremacist societies will not disapprove of slaves of the chosen race unless they are assigned to whore, serve the public, or work a glory hole, or be in one of the associated facilities.
  • Boosted the adoption speed of the age preferential Future Societies by giving increased impact based on age.
  • Minor encyclopedia revisions to better reflect game mechanics.
  • Various other descriptive expansions.
  • Continued code consolidation.
  • Bugfixes.

  2. Hooray! Thanks for the update. I have a couple of tentative suggestions to make, still from the previous version...

    1) Sending an amputee to the spa without an attendant on duty could be a drowning hazard.
    2) How come every facility can have a girl to oversee it, except for the arcade? This one could depend on the characteristics of the overseer to determine what happens there. A caring one might keep the prisoners' physical and mental health from deteriorating so quick and a cruel one would maximize profits but wear them out fast.
    3) Responsible positions (head girl, facility overseers etc) that have not been filled would of course be very sought after by the devoted girls. There could maybe be events where girls strive to improve themselves and prove their worth, so that they can be chosen for those plush jobs. That would also remind the player to fill these important empty positions.

      Position filling events are something that's been suggested before, and they should be in one of the next few updates. There's another possible version of these events, other a girl wanting to fill an empty position: a girl who thinks she'd do better than the current officeholder. A great user suggestion I haven't managed to fit in yet.

    1. That is a bit of a long-standing bug. It came in a month or two ago. The rules assistant options for removing piercings also do not work.

    2. Just go back to the rules assistant and select "slave's choice" (or whatever it's called) again. It's only a temporary fix; you'll have to do that every now and then. But it's better than nothing!

    Not there. The options are the same as the previous version, but with a blank space between the options for appraisal miniscenes and vignetes, while there was no space in the previous version. I'm guessing that's where the option was meant to be.

    What about servants? Those have to subserviently give 'oral relief' to other slaves. Pretty hard to keep that a secret from the public, since they seem to run around all over the place. Subservient sex slaves too, for that matter.

    Also, can I- slaves still get the 'too stupid to work the food dispenser' event? I think that event should probably be reserved for I-- slaves.
    Unless I- slaves are much dumber that I've been assuming.

    Also, are there inspector events for shelter slaves who have been unmindbroken or had their balls regrown?
    I just want inspector-sensei to like me...

    4. FC Author made a Mad Max-style mix between this and Warband, IIRC. The end game is the acrology influenced by global anarchy (weather, governments, what have you) and unable to support itself as a result. You strike it out as the leader of your citizens & slaves and continue from there on out...

      but that would be years from now, if it ever ends up happening.

    Also, TYPO - the "rebellious slave won't get out of bed" event has an extra space after the slave's name when the slave name link turns into regular text. (Putting this here because it happened with the same slave in the same week.)

    The slave school discount events are occurring when you cannot use the schools again.

    You used to get a reputation boost in your weekly report when slaves were maxed devotion/trust, but this seems to have disappeared.

    The new option for reducing notifications in the weekly report does not exist!

    Possible bug, possible REALLY wierd randomness. So far, the only judicial event I have seen in this version is the drunken owner one. It *could* just be random is as random does, but it seems pretty improbable.

    1. The "dilemma" events seem to trigger only when you have "enough" cash. "Enough" as in "over 10k" in my experience, which isn't actually enough for every single one of them as the schoolgirl one is 20k. This seems to be because the game first does a money check to see if you're eligible for a dilemma, and then fetches one of the dilemmas you haven't seen in the current playthrough yet.

      You can see this for yourself by refreshing the browser on the "dilemma" event page - the game will often throw out a completely different one.

  24. So, the Head Girl encyclopedia description says that a Head Girl requires a vagina to teach vaginal skills, but one with a penis is better at teaching other skills.

    Do these 'stack' for a Futa? So they can teach vaginal skills and are extra good at teaching everything except vaginal skills?

    1. Short answer: yes.

      Long answer: A slave without a vagina has no vaginal skills, and as such cannot pass them on to other slaves when made HG.

      A slave with a penis is slightly better at passing her oral/anal skills on to other slaves, because her dick lets her accurately gauge the pleasure a client would receive from the slave she's teaching. In other words, it's more effective than the strap-on a HG without a (sufficiently large) penis has to use to train other slaves.

      A HG with a vagina will pass her vaginal skills onto other slaves. A HG who has a vagina AND a sufficiently large penis will be BETTER at this, because she'll be able to tell when the slave she's training is giving pleasure to her partner.

    1. If you like a certain type of /d/ content, consider either writing the event yourself or floating a general idea somewhere (here, /d/ thread, TFGS forum, etc). If the idea is well-liked, someone may flesh it out for you, or even put it into code so FC dev can insert it into the game.

  27. I'm getting this error at the top of my weekly summary:
    Error: <>: error within contents (Error: <>: bad conditional expression in <> clause: State.variables.slaves[State.variables.i] is undefined)

    And all the slaves I buy are nicknamed "blank" (not capitalized). I just started a new playthrough, and therefore haven't done much yet. So I have no clue what could be causing it.

    1. Blank nicknames: just a guess, but do you have the "names based on future societies" option enabled? (Check the OPTIONS link in the left sidebar.) It could be that the game is attempting to rename your new slaves according to your FS, finds no FS, and instead of leaving names alone goes with "blank" instead.

    2. Ah. Well, if it has something to do with Future Societies, then perhaps it's because I took Social Engineering as my PC background (for the first time ever), and Degradationist as my free FS option.

      I wanted to try out a strategy where you immediately remove the Arcade reputation penalty with Social Engineering, and just start throwing truckloads of women into it from the get-go, and see how it compares in effectiveness to the Industrial Dairy, now that the latter requires hole stretching to use.

    3. It was indeed a problem with Degradationism, and it's fixed in 0.7.2.3. And the last time I tested it, Social Engineering -> Degradationism -> Full Arcade is still very effective. It's simpler but IIRC less profitable than the Industrial Dairy.

    4. This was my experience as well. Personally, I still like the Industrial Dairy because I enjoy the extra personal touch of preparing the girls beforehand, juxtaposed with how impersonal their machine-bound fate becomes. But Free Cities is such a cool management game, even disregarding its (tremendous) merits of sexiness. So I like to try different things.

      Right now I'm searching for a strategy to go full brothel. Maybe Slaver for bonus devotion on new slaves (assuming that's what it does? I'm not 100% sure) + Social Engineering -> Asset Expansion, then play conservatively with my cash until I hit a bear market after unlocking the slave schools and load up on a meaty dump truck full of Growth Institute ladies. My starting money would have to largely go to a proper Matron.

      I dunno. But that's what I'm going to try tonight. Any tips? =)

    The new game language setting is extremely easy to miss, since it only shows up in the character creation summary.

      Probably that option comes from the rape event ("Nevertheless, it seems one of your tenants saw fit to rape a free woman."). Version 0.7.2.2 does not allow you to geld the raper anymore.

      Based on what I remember from when it was implemented, buying it too soon gave you a rep penalty, and not buying it once the weather got really bad also gave you a rep penalty. Maybe I just misunderstood it.

    If it's the latter, that seems like an incredible amount of extra work for each scene.

    1. Mechanical only. Think of it like subtitles: if you choose Chinese as your lingua franca, the game will tell you (in English) that everyone is speaking Chinese.

  31. I don't know if this is planned but could you add ending(s) this game, preferably more is better. In my opinion if something doesn't has any goal/finish it will not be very satisfying. Of course players want to continue play indefinitely can presented a choice to continue play in sandbox or something. Which ending you will get can be determined by, your answers to major events or your societal shaping systems.

  33. Hi, I don't know if you're still open to suggestions for events, but here's one I came up with for when you own a sadist and an amputee

    Mei-Ling may not have arms but she still has armpits, and one afternoon you catch Olivia tickling them mercilessly. Poor Mei-Ling is completely helpless to do anything about it and begs you to save her.

  38. BUG: tenant dispute event.

    Started a new game in 0.7.2.2 and i have encountered a bug with the tenant dispute event. There are somewhere around five variations of this event each offering a different slave's contract to buyout. The text for the gangbanged virgin is now showing every time but the actual slave and the contract price is a random one from any of the event variations. So while the text of the event shows you're buying the gangbanged virgin, you may actually be buying the mother of the sick girl, gelded slave, indentured whore, etc.

  40. Bug?: Birth counter is lower in my save then I expected. Way lower. Says 13 when it should be at least 50+
    Bug?: Testicle and fertility drug does not get removed from weekly action when they do not do anything anymore.

    Ideas:
    1. Make additional weekly action for the PC mimicing whatever the head girl is set to do.
    2. Automatic fertility drug. Could be under the same RA rule as conceptions ie "Contraceptions and fertility drugs: No default, N/A(useless?), contraception, Fertile and fertility drug, contraception and fertility drugs", I hope I included them all. And you could also add it to the insemination option. Would be great if facilities like the dairy and master suite had it automaticly apllied, or a rule for each one of them all.
    3. Upper limit option for each drug instead of the limited one that makes all of my slaves have huge lips. Also something that the facilities could manage on their own.
    4. A worshipful head girl would have a hard time to take a week of so why not have the "equal" head girl do some few things in addition to the active one. Very limited of course.

I think you should just have the game add all the stats from all the slaves together for the management screen to avoid this is in the future. It is not as if the management screen does alot of calculation anyways.

  44. Dunno if this is the right place to request features, but how about giving upgraded facilities an option to stop automatically once a slave reaches certain values?

    If you have upgraded food dispensers, you can set your slaves' weight directly instead of having to watch like a hawk until they get the perfect amount of plush.
    If you purchase another upgrade that increases Upkeep, you get the option to automatically "fix" a slave's diet to include musclegrowth up to a specified level, and even manipulate her libido by adjusting the amount of cum/aphrodisiacum in her diet.

    Same for upgraded Pharmacies: If you have a certain upgrade, you can tell the dispensers to stop giving a slave lip-injections once the desired size has been reached.
    The extra modification for that facility would try to adjust the injections whenever a slave's body undergoes changes. For example: A slave gets injections for D-Cups, but is currently slimming down. Due to the slimming down, her breastsize increases, and the upgrade will start administering new injections to bring her up to D-Cups again.
    ->There would need to be something to clear the autoadministering when you use the auto-surgery. It wouldn't make sense if you reduce a slave's cup-size only to have the Auto-Apothecary increase them again.

    Another Request would be to expand the armory: The only way to grow muscles is via "food". Don't understand why this is listed under diet... The armory could become a cross with a gym (or you build a gym and the armory becomes an upgrade): after building it, you unlock a new entry in the slave menu where you can adjust their work-outs. You tell them to get ripped/toned/muscular/herculean and once they did that they stop, similar to how curatives stop being administered after reaching full health.
    You can even use that to help slaves loosing weight, giving them fitness/diet workouts instead.

    Last but not least, I would like to request an overhaul of the organ-growing farm: it happened quite a few times that I ordered an organ for a slave, but then forgot about it. As a result, I have a small yellow text telling me a slave can get her new organ, but I already sold it a few weeks ago... Instead of hiding it in a menu and giving me a small message that I can easily overlook, why not give me an event-popup? It tels me the organ is ready, gives a short vignette from the slave who's preparing to be operated on... and I can choose if I still want to go through with the OP or not.

    2. I didn't know that... I normally ignore the rules assistant apart from setting it up once so that every new slave begins with "standard" options. I tend to play with one slave I am working on, and once I am done I either move them into the relevant facility or sell them form money.

      Still, I tend to not use the Assistant because I like to set things like that myself. Besides, even the game itself say that "this function is... not fully complete" ^^
      It would just feel more natural if these things are managed via their respective facilities, and the Rules Assistant is used to process "new" slaves

    was jsut wondering if the coding currently treated the prior job as something that could be checked for event-eligibility, and if not if it could be without undue additional labor

    cause writing some events for prior-life influence could be fun

  52. BUG: When you start the game and create your slaves, creating a related slave will cause the first slave to lose any bonuses that you applied.

    The problem is the $slaveWithoutBonuses variable. You use it in "RG AS Dump" to store $activeSlave before the bonuses, then apply bonuses to $activeSlave, add $activeSlave to $slaves, then restore $activeSlave from $slaveWithoutBonuses. Later, when you add a related slave, the data on the existing slave in $slaves is then overwritten by the $activeSlave without bonuses applied.

    Also, in "Commit Starting Girl", the code for recruiters will only apply to $activeSlave, not the slave that is already in $slaves. I suggest moving that code to "RG AS Dump" instead.

    1. I figured it out after looking at the code. The variable $seed is used to hold the randomly selected justice event. Depending on what $seed it is, different slaves are generated. However, inside the code for "Generate XX Slave" and "Generate XY Slave", $seed is used to hold other data, so now it no longer hold the randomly selected justice event.

      TLDR: The problem is using the same variable name $seed in the justice event code and slave generation code.

  58. Bug: My concubine keeps on disappearing. It doesn't show any message as far as I've noticed, but she disappeared twice now. When she disappeared the first time I loaded an earlier save and it worked for a while, but some 10 turns after when she disappeared the first time she disappeared again.

    Something else I noticed, her mother's description switched to have a different slave as her daughter after her real daughter disappeared, but the new daughter doesn't have any description of the mother.

    Also, the event's setup paragraph begins with "Since you shortened X's tendons..." which does not take into account the possibility of acquiring pre-clipped slaves like from the "suspected escaped slave" event or the prestigious auction.

    SUGGESTION - change the setup paragraph to something neutral, like "Since X's tendons [are unnaturally short][have been clipped][are surgically altered]..."

    Alternatively, please consider expanding the event to slaves with worse than ambivalent devotion, since resentful slaves are disappointed to wear heels. I'm thinking of something like:

    "X is in your office for a routine inspection. You follow her gaze to her clipped feet, which are in [current footwear]. She looks up, catches you staring, and [stares back if hateful/looks away demurely/etc]. She is fully aware that the footwear is there by your choice, and that she can lose her mobility for the whole week at your whim. Your expression lets her know that you know this too. Thinking the matter over, you decide that this week she will wear..."

    The choices would be:

    1) Nothing - as current option. Raises/reduces devotion based on whether it's currently at "accepting" or higher, possibly advances pain fetish (by adding a line about the slave trying to stand without heels and collapsing in pain);

    2) Slutty - as current option. Raises/reduces trust based on whether it's currently at "accepting" or higher, possibly advances anal fetish;

    3) Pretty - as current option. Raises owner rep, possibly advances slave's humiliation fetish (because out in public wearing nothing but heels);

    4) Functional - gives the slave basic footwear customized to allow her to function normally. Raises devotion/trust for low-devotion slaves (because owner acknowledges her issues) but lowers both for high-devotion slaves (because owner doesn't find her worth the attention).

  81. I may be crazy for suggesting this, but I will go ahead and do it anyways. I know from the literature on the subject, disease in the FCs is gone, through whatever non-invasive, minimal impact device, pill, or product the player wishes to imagine. However, diseases have been known to evolve and even come out of nowhere. So imagine an event chain in which the player discovers the disease, or possibly just some subtle odd occurrences here and there. And this "disease" is actually an STD and if he allows his slaves to fuck each other then possibly all his slaves will get the disease. There should also be an option where the player discovers the disease before anyone else does, finds a cure for it, than contaminates his slaves with it and watch as it spreads, than once the whole arcology or arcologies are scrambling to find a cure, the player releases the cure and makes loads of cash and rep. Maybe an option where the player's plot is discovered. This event chain would be good to have multiple outcomes and multiple tracks. The first one would be that whatever slaves can get it, get it, before the player or anyone discovers it and he has to find a cure. I'll leave the effects up to you. But it'd be nice to have more stuff going on beside the main event line.
